The name means “at the foot of the mountains”, climatically protected and surrounded by the Alps, it has fertile land for wine production such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto. Well known for its gastronomic tours from Alba, as well as cultural city tours Turin (Torino).

It produces rich wines up on the hills above Chiavenna by small independent wineries that export in sparingly qualities so it’s best to taste it from the source.
If you are into winter sports, the ski resorts bordering with Switzerland like Livigno, as well as in Sondrio, Valtellina and Valchiavenna like the Bormio ski and natural thermal spa towns.
